THE body’s own version of cannabis may soon be sold as a painkilling gel or jab. Anandamide, a substance produced by humans that resembles the active ingredient in marijuana, can activate receptors in the skin and ease pain without affecting the brain. Kenneth Hargreaves of the University of Texas in San Antonio studied a group of rats with inflamed paws. The inflammation made the rats uncomfortable when they stood on a hotplate. The researchers then injected anandamide into the rats’ paws. An hour later, the animals spent as much time on a hotplate as they had before their feet became sore.
