AS in humans, smells can evoke vivid memories in insects, say researchers who have studied bees. Mandyam Srinivasan of the Australian National University in Canberra used interconnected chambers and rewards of sugar water to make bees associate the colour yellow with later exposure to the smell of mangoes. After this training, bees shown a yellow signal were far more likely to choose a chamber scented with mangoes than one scented with lemons (Nature, vol 396, p 637).
